Memorial Day is a national holiday in the United States celebrated on the last Monday of May to honor and remember those who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was established in the years following the Civil War and became a federal holiday in 1971.
The Fourth of July celebrates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The Declaration announced the political separation of the 13 North American colonies from Great Britain.
